Do-It-Yourself Scratch Removal

scratch removalIt’s a lovely weekend day.  You are on the prowl for a great used car.  You’ve pulled into a dealer that specializes in used car sales, and….Bingo…you spot the car of your dreams.  As you step closer, though, you are disappointed to see the paint has some scratches.  Should you take it or walk away?
Use the information below that talks about scratch removal products to decide whether or not some work on your part will give you the paint finish your prefer.
Keep in mind most products that promote their capability to remove scratches will have limitations.  Most are okay for removing light imperfections, but only the brand Quixx did a decent job of smoothing a scratch you can feel with a fingernail.
Circular, swirl scratches are typically the result of washing or drying with an inappropriate cloth, using a polish that is too abrasive, or driving through a car wash that isn’t working properly.  These usually can be removed with any scratch remover or even some car waxes.
Deeper lacerations are more difficult.  Using a scratch remover can make them less obvious only if the paint’s clear coat has not been penetrated.  Any scratch that reveals metal needs to be repainted.
Most removers are a liquid that you rub into the scratch and then wipe off.  Quixx takes the process a step further by including ultrafine sandpaper. Note though that you can easily remove the clearcoat as well which means you would need to repaint.
You should always try a scratch remover in a less visible spot as a test.  Some products may cause hazing. After using any scratch remover, apply a car wax to help protect the surface. Worthy choices include Black Magic Liquid Wax, Turtle Wax, and Eagle One Nanowax. All can help remove oxidation and swirl marks.
With a little effort, you may be able to return a beautiful exterior to that car of your dreams.
